The CWG Auction is coming.

The annual Cape Winemaker’s Guild auction is around the corner. Adi was recently filmed talking about his entry, the AA Badenhorst Family Wines Chase The Spice Swartland Shiraz 2014.

And, in the spirit of collaboration, he has also entered two wines which he made side by side with good friend Duncan Savage. This is the first ever collaborative wine between two members of the guild and we suspect these wines are going to sell quicker than you can say “bromance”.

If you’ve ever had a bottle of our wine (or Caperitif or Swaan Tonic) in your hands and took some time to examine the label you would have noticed a lot of detail. But did you know each detail has a story, a connection to our journey and our family?

No? Well let me enlighten you. In this post we’ll look at the horseshoe and the three headed bird (sometimes a goose, sometimes a swan, never a sparrow).

The three headed bird:

Yes, three heads are “trippier” than one, as Adi likes to point out, but in actual fact the meaning here refers to three generations of Badenhorst farmers.

Adi and cousin Hein’s grandfather was the farm manager of Groot Constantia for 46 years, their fathers were born there and farmed together in Constantia, making Adi and Hein the third generation. Adi obviously farms and makes wine in the Swartland while Hein has an olive farm in Prince Albert, amongst others.

The horseshoe:

The horseshoe is probably one of the most well-known good luck symbols of the Western world and has a long history as a protective symbol.

The symbol is quite common in Egyptian iconography. It is a very auspicious symbol, a charm used to protect against any form of evil and bring good luck. Read more here.

Swartland Heritage Celebration

It is true, come November there will once again be a unique regional wine experience to attend. Like at the very successful Swartland Revolution of the past the Swartland Independent Producers want to share the good food, stunning scenery and diverse (award winning) wine of the region with fans and friends. This time in the scenic West Coast town of Paternoster!

That’s right. International speakers, masterclasses, talks, tastings and music. And what the poster doesn’t tell you is that renowned local chef Bertus Basson has been confirmed as the weekend’s chef. Snacks, dinner, lunch…

After a few weeks of quiet cellar preparations the first grapes have arrived.

Two tons of Palomino came in from the Sout van die Aarde (Afrikaans, meaning Salt of the Earth) vineyard on the West Coast this morning!

I was too late and the boys in the cellar too busy (sticky fingers) to get a picture but I have been assured that the grapes are looking beautiful!

Meanwhile, the vintage might change but the rules stay the same:

While The Guardian proclaimed Grenache the toughest grape in the world and Forbes put the Swartland on their list of the top 12 underrated wine regions to visit in 2017.

We happen to have the oldest Grenache in the Swartland on Kalmoesfontein, so be sure to (make an appointment to!!) come visit us soon (and by soon I mean AFTER the harvest.)

DPBC Artisan Night

Our friends at Devil’s Peak Brewing Company have invited us to pair some wine with food prepared by The Taproom’s in-house chef David Walker at their monthly Artisan Night.

Welcome drinks, canapes and a fantastic three course menu specially created with the flavour of each wine in mind (trust us, we tasted all the options!). Add in some chirps from Adi and you have yourself a good night out.

We hosted the International Food and Wine Society for a “mini revolution” complete with Adi, Andrea, Callie and Eben, Where is Callie placemats, a harvest buffet by Judy Badenhorst and an informal SIP tasting. IMG_0183IMG_0192IMG_0196

And now for the news from Kalmoesfontein…

I went travelling and neglected the blog a bit, so here is an update from the last two months. A few nice things people said about our products, some love for Adi and new record prices…

The Drinks Business reports on the first release of South African Barbarossa. A nice story of neighbours, farmers and winemakers working together to do something unique. Click here for the full story.

Meanwhile, at the Cape Winemakers Guild Auction, Adi’s 2015 auction wine, the AA Badenhorst Family Wines Graniet-Berg 2013 set a new auction record for a white wine at R7‚000 for a case of six. This news was apparently so big, even my 92 year old Gran told me about it when I returned… “Adi se wyn was op die tv-nuus.”

According to Business Day Live “Among the white wines, four beat last year’s record, including Ataraxia Under the Gavel Chardonnay 2014 at R6‚400‚ the AA Badenhorst Family Wines “Geel-Kapel” Muscat de Frontignan 2013 at R6‚000‚ and Jordan Chardonnay Auction Selection 2014 at R5‚800.”

In July we hosted a writer for American Travel and Leisure magazine in the cottage and she wrote a nice article about the four founding members of The Swartland Revolution (the 2015 edition being just over two weeks away!).

While Tim Atkin (MW) wrote a story after the New Wave South Africa tasting in London last month, noting that “here is proof that South Africa is currently the most exciting wine-producing country on the planet…” (we’ll take that!) and Lonely Planet named the Swartland one of the top 10 Most Intriguing wine regions in the world. Let’s hope we don’t get wandering backpackers showing up for tastings… By appointment only hippies!

The Swartland is heating up (literally) while we have still had only about 45% of the rainfall we needed to get this winter and like I said, the Revolution is around the corner…
