The (extended) Badenhorst Family krismis lunch
As the year draws to a close we gathered for our annual extended family end of year lunch. This year, in true Adi style, we were simply told to arrive at 281 Voortrekker Road, Parow at noon-ish last Wednesday.
That makes this blog post a week late, maybe it took me that long to recover from what turned out to be a 12 hour adventure for a few of us, maybe I have not actually stopped partying since. Either way.
We gathered around a table for lunch at The Harlequin. Hein (Adi’s cousin, the dynamic one) and Gerrie (the finance guy who pays us all) came from Constantia, Naomi and Alinda (the wineadmin team) and Andre (Badenhorst Senior) came from the deep Southern suburbs, where the sea is. Helena (the cousin who writes all of this ‘info’) came all the way down Voortrekker Road from Woodstock and Adi, Narina and Jasper (with a cooler box full of wine) came from the Swartland.
The decor might be a tad dodgy, but the food was good and the French Loire wines and bubbly and Argentinian Malbecs from the cooler box made it all a very jolly affair. By desert time Andre even asked the waitress for ‘French Kisses’…

All together now, fltr Helena, Narina, Jasper, Gerrie, Alinda, Adi, Naomi and Hein with Andre in front.
Cheers to another good year!

Behind the scenes
The Revolution was photographed
Maree once again took some stunning pictures at the Swartland Revolution this year. Here are a few of our favourites, lots more on her blog.

There is a nice summery of the weekend on The Swartland Revolution’s site. Have a look.
Meanwhile, our Family Red 2009 is number 93 on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 wines for 2013. Not too shabby…
Coming soon…
Pyl Uile ready to leave the nest at Swartland Revolution 2013…

Spier Secret
This weekend it was time for the 2nd annual Spier Secret Festival (at Spier, obviously).
They celebrate Chenin Blanc (as we all should)
and Nicole was there to pour our latest Secateurs.
While at the food market Yoliswa sold her (world famous, if you consider the guests who have enjoyed them at our cottage on Kalmoesfontein) rusks under the trees.
Yoliswa was very happy with her sales and is already thinking of expanding her business. We would like to thank everyone who helped her make this a success, especially Varenka who designed the packaging.
Chenin photos with thanks to The Chenin Blanc Association of SA. View more here.

Pictures from Adi’s travels and random things on the farm (walking the fine line of becoming one of those blogs full of kids…) as well as some nice media attention received.
This is an update kind of blog, hello, here we are…
Above, Benjamin from Domaine Huet shows Adi some old casks.

Off loading and brief sorting of Chenin destined for some great Methode Ancestrale at Domaine Vincent Careme.
Louis, the son of Vincent and Tania Careme, holding on tight.
Wines from Sebastian David, from the Bourgueil region, exciting wines, no sulfur and organic!
Tasting in Bourguiel, above stellar wines by Catherine and Pierre Breton – organic since 1983.
Below Domaine de la Chevalerie – an underground cave of 1.5ha! Organic producers of wonderful Cabernet franc wines.
Back in the Swartland, Ana is baking cookies
while Samuel and his friends enjoy the first hot days of Summer 2013/4 by swimming with the tadpoles.
And Adi and Jasper have breakfast braais as the sun rises.

It is almost November, Swartland Revolution time, and even Time Magazine is getting in on the action.

We hope to see many of you at the Swartland Independent Street Party on November 9th, it really is the place to be…
Swart is the new black…
Learn from the best
And then he was in France.
Adi visited Vouvray this weekend to observe the best in Chenin Blanc.
Below is Damien Delecheneau (Domaine de la Grange Tiphaine), who will be in the Swartland to present Expert Opinions at The Revolution next month. He spent the Sunday afternoon picking a vineyard with friends.

While Vincent Careme, (Domaine Vincent Careme) might be one of the world’s best Chenin winemakers, Adi showed him how to pack a braai grill, and kept a keen eye on his braai skills (which apparently he learned from his South African wife Tania).
Both these legends will bring their wines to The Swartland Revolution and present them at the Expert Opinion tasting on Saturday the 9th of November.
If you did not get a ticket to the event, come to Riebeek for the Swartland Independent Street Party that afternoon, taste wine from 18 SI members and mingle in the streets. See you there.
