Our History
In 2008, cousins Adi and Hein Badenhorst acquired the Kalmoesfontein farm, a historic Swartland farm in need of restoration. The project began as a labour of love and soon became a vibrant estate where heritage and innovation meet. The cellar and homestead have been lovingly restored and today the farm embodies the essence of the Swartland wines.

Meet the Family
Kalmoesfontein is, first and foremost, a family farm. Cousins Adi and Hein Badenhorst brought new life to this Paardeberg property when they arrived in 2007. They started by restoring the old cellar and planting new vines, along with raising kids, hosting friends and gathering a circle of trusted collaborators. From grandparents in the veggie garden to siblings running accommodation and events, the Badenhorst family and their extended “by blood or wine” clan are stitched into every corner of the farm.
The Winery Team
The winery team works in a way that honours the land, the vines and the generations before them. Guided by Adi’s back-to-basics philosophy, they make wine with old cement kuipe, basket presses, instinct and patience. They know each vineyard by feel, each fermentation by scent and each vintage by the stories told around the cellar table.
Farm Teams
Our farm teams are the backbone of Kalmoesfontein and Jakkalsfontein. They tend old bushvines, care for orchards and animals, build dams, repair stone walls and keep every path, slope and patch of soil in working order. Their knowledge runs deep, their hands shape the landscape and their work keeps the farm thriving. Whether pruning, planting new vineyards, harvesting capers or fixing irrigation, they are the quiet, powerful force that makes life on the farm possible.
Kitchen Teams
Food is part of the fabric of Kalmoesfontein and our kitchen teams brings it to life. They forage, bake, braai and brew; they feed harvest crews before sunrise and host long table feasts long after sunset. Working with what’s seasonal and what the land gives, they turn simple ingredients into soulful plates that capture the spirit of the farm, honest, abundant, and always shared with laughter.
