Blends crafted from a mosaic of old bush vine vineyards on the family’s farms on the northern slopes of the Paardeberg.  These are mainly unirrigated bush vines planted in the 1950s and 1960s, grown on varied slopes and granite rich soils. The white and red Kalmoesfontein blends draw from diverse parcels to capture the breadth of terroir across the farm.

Kalmoesfontein White Blend

Small parcels of selected fruit from various vineyards from our farm. Grapes are cooled overnight and most are pressed together, whole bunch, the next morning. The juice is transferred to old casks for co-fermentation. Maturation takes place in 1200L and 3000L foudres. After 10 months wines are racked and blended in one concrete tank with all unsulfured lees and left to settle for 6-8 months before bottling.

Grapes: Chenin 45%, Clairette Blanche 11%, Grenache Blanc 10%, Palomino 8%, Viognier8%, Rousanne 8%, Muscat d’ alexandrie 5%, Verdelho 5%.

Kalmoesfontein Red Blend

Small parcels of selected fruit are sourced from seven vineyards on Kalmoesfontein. All the grapes get harvested, by hand, on the same day and refrigerated overnight. Around 40% of the grapes are destemmed – the whole bunches are “foot stomped” to extract juice to assist the onset of natural fermentation. Fermented in closed concrete tanks & left on their skins for 3 to 6 months before pressing.

Grapes: 33% Shiraz, 25% Grenache, 14% Cinsault, 12% Tinta Barocca, 8% Mataro, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Touriga Nacional.
